Several Berea Grads have gotten together to create the First Annual Alumni Gathering. The committee has selected Homecoming night, Friday, September 25, 2009 for this first event! Details are still being worked on but the basic schedule is: 5 PM A gathering in the high school cafeteria. Tables will be set up for individual classes to me at during this interval. 6.45 p.m. Homecoming events start on Finney Field. We will be sitting together. It is hoped we might be able to lead everyone in our Alma Mater. After-game get togethers are to be arranged by individual classes. Tony K’s will probably be the place most folks will go to after the game. Alumni reunion committee members: Dennis Kushlak (’59), Jane (Marting) Miller (’60), Don Auble (’62), Dick Luff (’62), Pat Epperson (’63) and Dave Tressel (’69). You will be receiving an official invitation in August. Due to costs of postage our invitation will be going out by e-mail and will be mailed only to those for whom we do not have an e-mail address. When you receive this notice and the invitation, we would appreciate it if you would take a moment to hit reply and let us know you received this update and the invitation okay. I have a list of classmates for whom we do not have e-mail addresses and for our missing classmates. I will be sending you a list of those classmates in a few days. First, I will wait to see how many e-mails bounce back from this mailing! If you have an e-mail address for any of those who ave fallen out of our e-mail address book, your committee would sure appreciate it if you would send it along to us. Many Thank You’s for your help! BEREA AREA NEWS
FAIRWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL will be closed and torn down this summer. A new school will be built on the present sight and is scheduled to re-open in 2010. Fairwood will become the only elementary school in Berea, Parknoll, Riverside & Smith will be closed. You may have heard whispers about Berea High & Midpark closing and a new high school to be built. This will probably happen but the final decision is 5 – 10 years down the road.
MIDDLEBURG TOWNSHIP, please note Middleburgh Township, not Middleburgh Hts. As most of you may know, Berea, Middleburgh Hts. and Brook Park were carved out of Middleburg Township. New Yorkers from Middleburg, NY were the folks who gave us the Middleburgh name.
This summer Berea, Middleburg Heights and Brook Park are joining together to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Jared Hickox’s arrival in Middleburg Township. All three cities will be holding parades during the summer. The Berea Historical Society is hosting an exhibit for all three communities. The Berea Historical Society also created an exhibit at the Middleburgh Hts. Library. On Saturday, August 1st there will be various events going on in Middleburg Hts. A ceremony will be held at the Hickox Cemetery on Bagley (the shopping center parking lot) at 10 a.m. and other festivities will occur at the Middleburg Hts. Community Center on Bagley. There will be two Old Fashion Baseball games. Two teams are coming up from Columbus. The Muffins, the men’s team and a ladies team, sorry, I don’t know the name of the ladies team. They will be playing teams created from local residents.
I hope many of you have an opportunity to visit the Berea Historical Society’s exhibit and the one at the Middleburgh Hts. Library during the coming months. And, let your friends and family know about the exhibits.
I am encouraging you to join one of our local historical groups. I am attaching a membership form for the Berea Historical Society. I had hoped to have one for Middleburg’s group, but they haven’t sent it over to me. I will give you the name of a contact person. Brook Park folks, there isn’t a Brook Park historical society. Many Brook Park residents have joined Berea’s Historical Society. Both groups could use your support for our summer events. They can also use volunteers throughout the year.
I, for one, am always looking for volunteers. I’m the Genealogy Chairman at historical society and I have several projects that need the help of volunteers. Right now we are just about caught up with our Death Notice collection. There are two volunteers working on data entry from some old (1896-1935) funeral books. We are also starting to work on old photographs. You may know these ladies, Shirley (Berila) Cartellone, Shirley (Kessler ’62) Maddock, Margaret Lovell, Anne Belknap and Eileen Bell (Mrs. Rob’t Bell). You don’t have to be a member of the Berea Historical Society to volunteer! Oh, and Joel has been re-elected to serve as Treasurer for the society for third year.

In case you are wondering, about one-third of our BHSociety members live out-of-state. Right, Paula? Members receive our quarterly newsletter, edited by Louise & Dave Allen, “The Enterprise.” Those of you who are already members, your renewal letter will be in the mail the first of June.
BEREA HOUSING PROJECT If you lived in the Berea Projects would you please contact me? Ann Belknap has been working on creating a list of everyone who has lived in the Projects. Creating this ‘history’ was a project she did for her Master’s degree, and her project continued to grow over the years. . She will be more than happy to contact you with her questions: basically, where did you live, who where your parents, siblings, how long did you live there and where did you move to when you left the projects? Thank You for your help.
First Congregational Church U.C.C. has been sold to Baldwin-Wallace. Sunday, May 31st was the last service at the church. The congregation will now meet at the B-W Chapel while looking for a place to relocate.
BHS IS ON FACEBOOKIf you are interested in connecting with old friends, classmates or family Facebook is a fun way to do so. It is free. There are over 30 of us on the ‘1963 Berea/Midpark Ohio’ group page. I have been placing photos from various class events on the website.
When you register, and you can hide so no one knows you are there, look at the bottom of your page. There will be the an ‘f’ next to Applications, click on that and a box will pop up with some choices, you want the couple in silhouette, or there may be a tool bar next to Applications with the silhouette. Click on the couple and a group page will come up and you can search for us there. There are tons of other groups for schools, businesses, hobbies, etc.
